International Driving Permits
International Driving Permits (IDPs)
An IDP is accepted in different countries and usually allows the holder to drive a private motor vehicle without having to do anything different in the country you are travelling in.
An IDP cannot be issued more than 3 months in advance.
Applicants have to be over 18 years of age and hold a valid full licence.
There are three types of IDP that may be required:
- 1926 Paris Convention (valid for 1 year from date of issue)
- 1949 Geneva Convention (valid for 1 year from date of issue)
- 1968 Vienna Convention (valid for 3 years from date of issue or expiry of licence, whichever is sooner)
The version of the IDP you will require depends on which country you are visiting and whether it is party to the 1926, 1949 or the 1968 Convention. https://www.gov.uk/driving-abroad/international-driving-permit
